What can  the Internet do for me ?

The Internet can provide a number of unique ways of communicating .
These provide excellent ways of improving your knowledge and understanding
of  all subjects . The latest information is available through online magazines
and newspapers, from all around the world. Other resources, such as textbooks and libraries can only provide a small fraction of the resources available on the Internet. The information is available in text, photographs and diagrams, maps, sound (speech and music) and video formats.

Here are a few ways of using the Internet....

E-Mail      World Wide Web     Usenet

1. E-Mail

This is the most common activity. It enables you to contact individuals, organisations
anywhere quickly  and effectively. Usually the response to your letters , provided you
obey a set of  guidelines, can be be prompt. This allows considerable advantages over
normal post ,or 'snail' mail as it is referred to on the Internet. It is great for getting to
know people , making new friends, and for learning about other countries and cultures.
Before using E-mail you must read, understand and sign the Acceptable User Policy.

2. World Wide Web

This is the main reason why the Internet has increased in popularity across the world.
The information is displayed graphically, on web browsers such as Netscape or Microsoft Explorer.Recent advances allow multimedia presentations possible , and video and speech links are increasing rapidly. This allows people to see and hear each other, and for conferences and
discussions to take place.Web pages on the interne normally have the addresses starting  like
http://www.Our complete address is http://www.zen.co.uk/home/page/nchadd .
This takes you to the main page of a collection of pages which are linked to the main page.
In turn , our pages have external links across the internet. To  make this possible , we use a
special language called html (hypertext mark-up language). The special method of communicating
by www is called http (hypertext transfer protocol)

3. USENET

There are thousands of discussion groups ,on virtually every subject.
However, certain precaution and limitations are needed , for your safety.
As with any form of access to the Internet at school, your safety and protection
is paramount. You must also obey certain procedures , known as Netiquette
when communicating in Usenet discussion  groups.

Full details are given in the Acceptable User Policy.
