How does the Internet Connection Work ?

Information from a computer normally goes through a modem , to the Internet Service Provider, and then onto the Internet. The information is coded and sent in small electronic units called packets Each packet of information has a code linking your internet address with that of the address of the receiver. The reverse happens when information is sent to you.
There are many different ways ,or routes, that the information can reach you, or reach its destination. Think of the network structure like a spider's web,and consider the many ways in which information could pass from one link (node) to another. If a connection is broken, the information can usually find another way around the web of connections to get to you. It might not be the shortest route, but the information should reach you, provided you are still online.
At peaks times when everyone is trying to use the Internet, the rate at which
information can move is reduced...and can move very slowly. This can be improved
by increasing the number of optical cables which link the various parts of
the network. This called known as 'increasing the bandwidth', and it allows
more information to flow each second.
