Introduction to North Chadderton School
North Chadderton School is an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school situated 3 miles from the centre of Oldham in a residential area within very easy reach of the M62. It is a split site school, with Years 7 and 8 in one building. Years 9-13 are based in another building , the buildings being about 1.5 miles apart.
We are a Group 6 school, with about 1470 on roll, 170 of whom are in the Sixth Form. We have been recognised as a school of proven worth by the Department for education (DFE) and North Chadderton is the only Local Education Authority (L.E.A.) controlled 11-18 school in Oldham. There are 90 members of staff, plus a librarian and other technical support staff across the curriculum including classroom and pastoral assistants. The school has a truly comprehensive intake from a varied catchment area.
We consider ourselves to be friendly, caring , business-like school where morale in the staffroom is high, pupils and staff relate well to their peers and to each other. We hope that when visitors enter the school they will experience an open, welcoming atmosphere, a sense of purpose and industry and an awareness of order.
The school is organised pastorally on a year system, with a year Tutor for each Year 7-13. We consider that a strong pastoral system is a crucial underpinning of the academic life of the school. This is organised each year into two parallel half-years, with mixed-ability teaching in these half-years in all subjects except Mathematics, which is set in year 7. The general philosophy of the school is that mixed ability teaching should continue as long as it is effective. Heads of department who wish to form sets in Years 10 and 11 usually do so after full consultation. Special Needs pupils and pupils for whom English is a second language are no exception - they receive most of their help through in-class assistance. There is some withdrawal from class, but very little, and only as a temporary measure.
All students in Years 10 and 13 have a personal tutor with whom they meet regularly on a one-to-one basis for guidance and support in their work.
We follow the National Curriculum throughout the school, with compulsory Maths, English, Humanities, Science, Technology, Modern Language, P.S.E., P.E. and one free choice options in Years 10 and 11.
