Mount Teide, Tenerife

Mount Teide, and surrounding flora

The road to Los Cristianos, from Mount Teide. In Spring there is a spectacular glow of flora, even at this  high altitude. You do not have to travel very far once you are in Tenerife to realise that you are on an island of volcanic origin. El Teide is a relatively recent volcano, formed over 1 million years ago. It is the highest mountain in Spain, with an altitude of  3718 m . The surrounding landscape is a protected zone, and is designated as The National Park of the Teide.  Established in 1954, the park covers an area of over 13,500 hectares, at an average altitude of 2000m . Mount Teide was once used as a natural lighthouse for distant ships.

The (almost) barren  landscape below Mount Teide. Some plants are able to survive at this altitude.
