Solar Power

Passive Solar Collector : Used to heat water for domestic use.

Demonstration to show that a black surface (right) absorbed solar energy at a greater rate that a bright shiny surface (left)

Solar reflector. The solar energy is reflected to a focus (tip of the metal rod ) . The high concentration of heat energy results in a high temperature. Food placed in this position can be heated

Display of solar-powered devices The central one consists of a long semicircular reflector. The water pipe (black) is placed at the focal point of this solar reflector.

Active Solar Cells : These convert solar energy into electricity. Useful for supplementary power source, and recharging of batteries. large scale generation of power by solar cells is limited by (i) the cost of the cells, (ii) the low efficiency, (iii) requirement of very large land areas

All these photographs were taken at the Institute for Renewable Energy, (ITER), Parque Eolico de Granadilla, Tenerife, Canary Islands. This is the technological walkway area, an interactive exhibit area showing the potential for renewable energy resources on Tenerife, and other local islands. A photovoltaic solar cell array is located on the roof of the headquarters.
the area covered is 210 square metres, giving an annual production of 61 MWh of electrical energy.
