The Tenerife Project : What can we learn about the island ?
The
island is of volcanic origin , and provides an excellent basis for study
for geology and geography. It has a sub-tropical climate, with its own regional
variations, providing a rich variety of flora and fauna.
Its
geographical location has resulted in considerable development of natural
resources, in the provision of electrical energy. There is already a large
wind farm being constructed, and a centre for alternative energy is just
a few miles away from Los Christianos. The use of solar energy in domestic
hot water sytems is extensive.
The
island has an interesting history, involving conflict between Britain and
Spain. General Franco was based on the island , shortly before the Spanish
Civil War. The links between the island and South America, and Cuba, is well
established, following extensive emigration to these areas, following the
severe reduction in the production and export of bananas.
The
island forms and excellent study of the Spanish language. It also provides opportunities
to make contacts with many other visitors to the islands, especially those
many visitors from Norway Sweden,Germany and Russia.
The
island provides an opportunity for studying aspects of differences in cultures,
between the different communities on the island . The island is well established
as one where second homes are bought, and where many UK visitors spend
their years in retirement.
The
island provides the facilities for a wide range for sporting activities.
An extensive study can be made of these activities, which include : paragliding,
hanggliding, golf, swimming, wind surfing, yachting, mountain biking, football,
volleyball, handball, rambling/walking.
The
economic growth of the country is largely dependent on the tourist industry.
A large number of residents are actively involved in the service industry
needed to support this industry. The location of the island makes it an ideal
place for developing trade between continents.
These are just a few examples of the areas for study of the island of Tenerife.
