The Internet is an International Network of computers.
Hundreds of thousands of computers are linked together, allowing information
to pass easily
from one place to another. There is a main global network of computers. Hundred
of smaller networks of computers form part of the larger global network.
All these networks are connected together by alarge international telephone
system. The networks are run by governments, colleges ,universities, companies
and corporations. Individual users and smaller organisations connect to network
by a link points, called nodes.Nodes are usually provided for by the internet
organisation that you subscribe to, usually on a monthly basis.
As a result of the open nature of the internet, the exact number
of people using the internet cannot be calculated accurately, but one estimate
is over 30 million ! The rate of growth is very rapid in the developed
countries. It has been estimated that by 2010 everyone in these countries
will have access to an Internet connection.
Our school's connection is provided by Zen
Internet , one of the UK's most efficient
and reliable Internet Service Provider (ISP). An ISP normally allows you
to have E-Mail addresses, and provide space on their computers to store files
and homepages. These pages are currently stored on Zen's computers. We upload
the information for our homepages with a programme which uses FTP (File
Transfer Protocol)
