Software for making quizzes and tests…..

Here is a review of useful software for teaching and learning

H5P ( www.h5p.org is a relatively new kid on the block and it provides an extremely easy way to construct tests and assessments. The construction of a test is so easy to follow and requires no knowledge of coding at all.  It provides a large number of types of quiz/assessment options You can even produce a presentation including a variety of links, videos and assessments. It is so easy to construct interactive content by adding the H5P plugin to your WordPress, Moodle or Drupal site, or you can create content directly on H5P.org and embed it on your website. It is all done through a web browser. The other main attraction is that it entirely free to use…and it its an Open Educational Resource (OER).  Highly recommended for both teachers and students!

Here is an example…..

Question Writer  (used by Dr.Overy for GCSE/A-Level Revision Packages)

QuestionWriter is an excellent professional package that can enable teachers to construct and publish online quizzes with ease. A very useful interface, with advanced features, including the ability to publish for the web or for SCORM 1.2.

QuestionWriter is available in three versions : Basic, Standard  and Professional

The Standard version is free to download and use, but is limited to multiple choice questions only. The Standard and Professional versions offer a whole range of quiz types to be constructed, including the facility to import and use images. Now updated to offer quizzes to be compliant with HTML 5 .

Hot Potatoes

Hot Potatoes is a powerful resource for producing a range of interactive activities.

Examples of quizzes made using this software can be seen on this website at www.webschool.org.uk/revision

All you need to do is enter the data for your exercises (questions, answers, responses etc.), and press a button. The program will create the Web pages for you, if needed. They can then be uploaded them to one of our websites. Alternatively, you can print versions of your exercises. The choice is yours. You can include your own images in the exercises. Hot Potatoes is free for use by state educational institutions which are non-profit making, on the condition that the material produced using the program is freely available to anyone via the WWW.

Download the software from http://hotpot.uvic.ca/

The tutorials are provided in the software. OR You can access the online tutorials at http://hotpot.uvic.ca/wintutor6/tutorial.htm

Wondershare QuizCreator    ( used by Dr.Overy for online revision material)

This product is very easy to use. It has 18 question types, including Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blank, Matching, Likert Scale & Short Essay. Questions can be enhanced  with images, Flash video and audio can be used , including voice-over, and text-to-speech. Another advantage is that users can insert math and science symbols with the equation editor to create quizzes for Math, Physics, and Chemistry. Users can publish flash quizzes to QuizCreator Online, or upload the published Flash quiz to the web. Unfortunately HTML 5 option appears to be missing, so users are apparently stuck with the rapidly disappearing Flash option. However, users can still generate a SCORM quiz package for LMS and produce stand-alone EXE file for CD.

iSpring Quizmaker  (also used by Dr.Overy for online revision material)

This is a superb package, offering a wide range of question types to be set up and a number of import and export options, including HTML 5 publication format. This is good news for the impending doom of the Flash format. Easy to use, and a breeze to upload to your website, or import to your learning environment (SCORM compliant option is offered). Of course, a printing option is provided, by exporting the quizzes to MS Word.

A-PDF Quizzer

This is a superb quiz-making tool. It puts many of the other quiz-making packages to shame.  It is sold at a fraction of the prices of other more well known software packages.  It is difficult to find it online though search engines….but once you have found it you will not be disappointed.  The  download version offers users to explore the many options available.  A-PDF Quizzer provides different quiz types for you to choose, such as True/False, Multiple Choice, Multiple Response, Fill in the Blank etc.  With using A-PDF Quizzer, you are also able to add images, video, equation, sound for each question, and publish the created test on your website instantly.  The output formats  include Flash for online publication, or  quizzes can be saved as zip package, an exe file,  a Flash quiz for CD delivery, and can be published as a word or excel file.  The only output format that is missing appears to be Html5.  Nevertheless,  it offers superb  value for money.

SchoolHouse Test Maker

This is superb software, offering a wide range of question types. It seems more of a challenge than other software packages to use , mainly due to the complex structure and options of the interface. However, if you persevere,  the results can certainly be very impressive.  Its would be attractive to schools/educators wishing to produce their own customised tests/examinations for printing.  However a number of other export options include formats useful for including in virtual learning software, such as Moodle and Blackboard .  Can be purchased for individual use or whole school installations. The enterprise edition offers educators/schools to produce their own packages for distribution or to generate income be selling their quiz packages !
